History your thing? Try a museum!
As a smaller town, McHenry doesn’t have the expansive, interactive science and industry museums that some of the larger cities have. But if you’re the kind of person that loves learning about local history, make sure you stop by the McHenry County Historical Society and Museum. In business for over 50 years, the museum has collected local artifacts and preserved memories over the decades they’ve been around. And right there at the museum is the original one year school! Founded in 1985, the West Harmony one-room school combined students of all years and subjects into a single room for education. Let students experience the old days with a two-hour session that’s open for third to fifth graders Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the school year.
Love puzzles? An escape room might be more your thing!
Rapidly gaining popularity all around the world, Escape Rooms put participants in a locked room and give them all the tools they need to escape; as long as they can work together to solve the series of puzzles leading to the key in time. And Twisted Limits Escape Rooms is right here in McHenry! Two to eight people have one hour to discover the way out of their room to win the game. But just because you’ve solved one doesn’t mean you’re all done! With three different rooms each with their own setting and types of puzzles, there are plenty of challenges to complete and test your wits!

If you’re an adult who prefers something less stressful to wind down after a long day of work, consider stopping by Chain O’Lakes Brewing Company in McHenry. Known to locals as COL, the tap room is owned by a Marine Corp Colonel who puts his discipline to work on only brewing the best local craft beer. With no bottles available yet, this beer can’t be found anywhere but the COL Taphouse. Grab a pint, quart, or even half gallon growler and enjoy some of the best beer that Illinois has to offer!
